London Corn* Exchange , Monday, Dec 22 I...
London Corn * Exchange , Monday , Dec 22 In the past week the arrivals of wheat of home produce for our market were moderately good , but bv no means extensive . Of English barley a lar » ' e quantity came to hand , while the receipts of all other articles of grain coastwise were seasonably large . The imports of foreign and colonial wheat and flour were considerabl y on the increase , but those of all other descriptions of grain were rather small . Fresh up to-day—owing in a great measure to the late dechnem the quotations here , the supplies of English wheat , coastwise as well as by land carriage and sample , were very small , and of very inferior quality hence the show of parcels of both red and white was by far more limited than wehave had to renortfor
some time past . This circumstance , together with the fact that most of the large dealers , who have lately refrained from purchasing beyond what they haverequired to meet their immediate wants , out of _shortjstock , caused the demand for all kinds _! of English wheat to rule firm , at an advance in the currencies realised on this day se'nnight of from ls to 2 s per qr , at which a' good clearanco was effected by the factors . Notwithstanding the large arrivals of forei _gn wheat , 27 , 000 qrs last week , theshow of parcels ( dutv paid ) to-day was very small . Still , however , the sale _orthatarticlewas in a very sluggish state , the transactions being wholly of a retail nature , at last week s prices . Corn under lock was so inactive that prices ru . ed almost nominal . This applies equally to wheat , barley , oats , beans , and peas . London Smitiifield Cattle Market, Mo.Vd....
London Smitiifield Cattle Market , Mo . VD .. r Dec . 22 . —Notwithstanding the present advanced period of the year , the imports of live stock from abroad during the past week have been again _exten-? ive—43 oxen and 3 heifers having been received pet the John Bull ( which vessel lost 20 of her original cargo in aheavy gale of wind ) and Caledonia steamer _, from Hamburgh ; while , from Rotterdam , 51 cows 50 oxen , 1 , 275 sheep , and 50 pigs have been received per the Ocean and Attwood steam packets , in eenc
rally speaking , good condition . To-day we had _^ sale GO Hamburgh and Dutch beasts , andGOOsheepthe latter wholly from Rotterdam ; the former were disposed of at from £ 15 to £ 22 , the latter 30 s . to 47 s , per head . At the outports , 60 sheep and 80 beasts have been imported from Holland . According to tbe official accounts made up for the _Jaafc three yeara up to the 5 th of November in each year , the following were the imports of foreign stock in the United King ° dom during those period : — .
18-13 . 1811 L 345 . Ox-en and Bulls 1019 2880 8113 Cows 348 S 3 G 4000 Calves 30 53 5 U Sheep 100 ...... 1272 8263 Lambs 6 10 112 Swine and Hogs 319 237 055 The above great increase in the importation oi sheep must be chiefly attributed to the unusually high prices at which those of home-fed have been selling in this market during the last tliree months ; hence further large arrivals may be expected from Unhand during the coming season . Considering this was the first Monday following the great Christmas market _.
the supply ot beasts on offer this morning was good and of very superior quality , especially as relates to the Devons , Hereford ? , and shorthorns . The best qualities were in fair request at Friday ' s depressed currencies—the highest figures , ranging from 4 s . 2 d . to 4 s . 4 d . per 81 b . ; but all other kinds were a dull inquiry , and the quotations were with difficulty supported . At the close of the market a total clearance was not effected . With the exception of about ft )) beasts , divided in ahout equal portions from the western , midland , and northern districts , the bulloci ' supply was chiefly the refuse of last week ' s _amrafe The supply of sheep was again limited , but above a : average quality , particularly that portion of it _( _fc
rived from _hssex , bussex , and Norfolk . The _gres tailing off in the numbers induced the salesmen In demand higher rates , which , however , were not submitted to by the butchers ; consequently , the mute trade may be considered steady , at prices about equal to those obtained on this day se ' nnight . The first arrival of lambs , ten in number , took place from tie Isle of Wight . Their quality was good , aud fair average prices were obtained for them . Prime small calves , which were _scarco , moved off steadily at f _ prices ; but the value of other kinds was with _dilSculty supported . From Ireland , 273 pigs came t > hand direct , per steamer ; while we had on show li from Holland . Generally speaking , the pork tnvk was firm , at fully previous rates .
