declaring a dividend at the rate of 3 J per cent , on the ordinary consolidated stock and the usual payments on the guaranteed and preference shares having been moved and seconded , Mr . Meifclam moved , as an amendment , that as fully as it could be done with prudence , all predetermined work should cease on Sabbath . The resolution was carried on a show of hands , the amendment being consequently rejected . Edinburgh axd Glasgow Railway Company . — On Tuesday the half-yearly meeting of the shareholders
of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company was held in the offices of the company , Dundas-street , Glasgow , Mr . Blackburn , -M . P ., in the chair . The chairman remarked upon the decrease which had taken place in the traffic receipts . The directors were sorry to see a falling off in the returns of the half-year ; but the decrease was common to all the railways . On the motion of the chairman , seconded by Mr . Durilop , a dividend of 5 per cent , on preference , and 3 per cent , on ordinary stock , was declared .
, » Pembroke Dock , and Tenby Line . —Some six weeks ago we advocated the propriety and the necessity of at once constructing a line of railway between Pembroke Dock and Tenby . We are pleased to learn that there is now a prospect of the line being speedily commenced . During the past few days Mr . Hamilton H . Fulton , C . E ., of "Westminster , has been engaged in surveying the proposed line , and finds no engineering difficulties whatever . It will be a surface line and will uot cost more than 5000 Z a mile . It is supposed that most of the owners of the property through which the intended line will pass will take out the value of the lands in shares and at agricultural prices . —Milford Telegraph . Chester and Holthead Railway . —Yesterday the half-yearly general meeting of the proprietors was held at the Euston-station . The report contains a statement of assets and liabilities which exhibits ah estimated
balance of 15 , 2827 . lls . in favour of the company ., after liquidation of all claims , including [ replacement of the revenue receipts applied to the payment of capital charges . The traffic receipts of the half-year exhibit a decrease of 4573 ? . 10 s . lOd . in the earnings of the railway , as compared with the corresponding period of the year previous . The falling off is princi pally under the head of " goods ; " the receipts from merchandise traffic have not been affected . A balance of 56 , 148 / . 18 s . Id . is shown to the credit of revenue account , which , after providing for debenture interest and other first charges , leaves the sum of 52 , 351 ? . 17 s . 5 d . available for division . The directors recommended the declaration of a dividend , as for six
months , at the rate of 5 £ per cent , per annum , on tjie first Preference Stock of the company ; and as for three months , to 31 st December , 1857 , at the rate of 5 per cent , per annum , on the second Preference Stock , leaving a balance of 1663 Z . 8 s . 7 d . to be carried forward to the current half-year ; balance to credit of revenue , 22 , 351 ? . 17 s . Sd . ; dividend on first Preference Stock at 5 £ per cent , per annum , 17 , 325 ? . ; dividend on second . Preference Stock at 5 per cent , per annum , 3363 ? . 8 s . lOd . Total—20 , 688 ? . 8 s . lOd . Balance—1668 ? . 8 s . 7 d . The dividend -warrants will be made payable on 15 th December next . The chairman , Mr . Jackson , said that the accounts showed a balance of 1663 ? . to be carried forward to the next half-year , but it was right he should state now that , owing to an increase in the working
expenses under the agreement -with the London and North-Western Company , it was highly probable that this balance would be somewhat reduced . The directors proposed to-day to take powers to issue a permanent debenture stock , which would be offered in the first instance to the shareholders , and then , as favourable occasions might arise , to the public . In moving the adoption of the report , he was glad to say there was now every prospect that at no distant period the ordinary shareholders would be receiving a dividend . Mr , W . O . Stanley , M . P ., seconded the motion . The report was adopted , and the dividend declared in accordance with its recommendation . A resolution was then passed , authorising the directors to create a Four per Cent . Perpetual . Debenture Stock .

Home, Colonial, And Foreign Produce Mark...
HOME , COLONIAL , AND FOREIGN PRODUCE MARKETS . REYIEW OF THE WEEK . Mincing Lano , Friday Evening . , ** Wjb have had A steady business all the week , with an utter absence of speculation . " With these remarks a leading firm in the oil and seed trades sums up the transactions of the week in their circular of this morn " •¦ '¦''" inky' ^ tidniiBfr *^ exact letter , at least with considerable force , to avery other department . Some speculation certainly la perceptible , but it is the exception and not the rule . Perhaps the best feature ( next to the satisfactory finishing up of the harveatVia the increasing activity in manufacturing' products , and in cotton more especially , for while operative labour Is thus favourably situated , the ¦ demand for most of the leading articles of domestic consumption is likely to bo sustained . Holders of produce
generally are firmer in consequence , and where a temporary cessation of buying occurs , show no disposition to force oh business , but await its revival with confidence . Corn . —The auspicious weather , which has prevailed most opportunely during the present week , has enabled farmers in the late districts throughout the kingdom to carry the remaining crops in excellent condition ; and the harvest may now be said to have been brought to a most satisfactory conclusion . And to this circumstance , coupled with some increase in the supplies at Marklane , may be attributed the evident disinclination of the trade to purchase beyond the bare sufficiency for immediate wants . Farmers and factors on the other hand
gather confidence from the position of foreign markets , which is such as to preclude any immediate prospects of large or even average importations . By these means business is checked , and so also is any material fluctuation in prices . At Mark-lane , only the prime qualities of English wheat have been in demand , and these have realised steady prices , whilst inferior grades , of which the supplies have chiefly consisted , have hung heavily on hand although offered at Is . to 2 s . reduction ; prime white samples from Kent and Essex made 50 s . to 51 s . ; down to -17 s . to 40 s ., for good useful qualities . Forei gn wheat , of which , tbo imports have been moderate , has been taken in retail quantity at about former prices : Dantzig , 53 s . to 55 s . ; extra prime ,
56 s . to 58 s . ; fine Rostock , 51 s . to 52 s . ; ,-trench , 4 os . to 4 . 6 s . ; St . Petersburg , 41 s . to 41 s . ; and inferior Russian , 38 s . to 40 s . per qr . Flour has been purchased sparingly , and prices in many cases are barely sustained . The top price of Town made , however , remains at 43 s . ; Town households , 36 s . ; No . Twos , 32 s . to 33 s . ; Country households , 33 s . to 35 s . ; Seconds , 30 s . to 32 s . ; and Norfolks , 30 s . 6 d . to 31 s . per sack . French has sold iu limited quantity at 37 s . for . fine , but little American is onoffer , and advices of a continued absence of shipments have been received . Holders are consequently very firm in their demands for all prime qualities ; fine Xew Orleans held at 24 s . to 25 s . Of the somewhat increased supplies of barley , choice samples , which comprise but a small proportion ,
find a ready sale at the full terms of 44 s . to 45 s . ; inferior malting kinds are however dull . Good grinding sorts are still in request at quite late rates . Malt is purchased sparingly , choice ware held at 72 s . With rather better supplies of beans , purchases have in partial instances been made with some advantage in terms ; but scarcely any change can be inade in general quotations , and line old samples are fully sustained in value . Peas continue scarce and dear . Oats of really prime quality and condition are not over plentiful , and command full terms . A few have arrived from Ireland , and bring 31 s . per 42 lbs . Good foreign are worth 24 s . to 24 s . 6 d . ; but the bulk of the supplies consist of low Russian , out of condition , and they sell slowly at prices ranging as low as 20 s . to 21 s .
Cochineal . —Middling silver grain has been in active demand for export , and prices have advanced Id . to 2 d . per lb . on these descriptions . Other qualities have met a steady sale at full prices . In anticipation of late crops , several speculative , purchases have been entered into , by which the buoyancy in the market ha 3 been increased ; 450 b- ^ s . iu auction were chiefly disposed of , Honduras silvers , 3 s . oil . to 4 s . 3 d . ; Teneriffb , 3 s . 9 d . to 3 s . lid . ; Mexican , ijs . 5 d . to 3--. 9 d . Business to some extent is also reported private ! v .
Sapflowek . —The market continues firm , and far small lots , to close immediate orders , full terms are paid . The llydaspes , with the second consignment of the new crop , has arrived . At sale 124 bales Persian realise ! 56 s . to 61 s . ' ¦ Otheu Dves . —Seel wood is dearer , 4 ? . 10 s . to 4 ? . 12 s .. 6 d . having been paid . Sapan steady in value and demand . Cirrcii is still quoted at 34 s . to 3 (* s ., but purchases are limited to immediate requirements . Gambii-: r , —The sound of 500 bales was held in . public sale at l ( js . ; but lirst-class damaged sold at 14 s . 6 d . per cwt . ¦ '• '
but the sales have , been of limited extent only . Both landings and deliveries continue large and the stock heavy . . Saltpetre . —The market is extremely irregular-Fine 2 k per cent , has sold at 46 s ., which is lower , whilst 15 and 1 U per cent , refractions are said to have brought 42 s . at a time when other parcels of similar qualities were offering at lower prices without finding buyers . The Calcutta accounts give some increase in shipments ' but these / nearlall of fine whilst the
wore y , qualities , lori" --awaited supplies from the interior appear to have been Ies 3 than expected , as only 13 , 000 bgs . were left in stock at Calcutta at the departure of the mail . Prices were also higher , and although this may be chiefly explained by the activity of demand for immediate shippin " , it could hardly have occurred in the face of heavy supplies . Altogether the advices are regarded as favourable to holders in this market , and to-day the tone has been decidedly firmer .
Indigo . — ihe crop accounts by the present mail are somewhat conflicting , but do not , on the whole , alter prior estimates as to the ultimate yield , which maybe taken at 89 , 000 to 90 , 000 maunds , or 30 , 000 chests . The market , therefore , remains uninfluenced and firm , with a steady inquiry for good shipping qualities of Bengal at 3 d . to 4 d . advance on the last quarterly sales ' rates . For the forthcoming auctions on the 12 th October , 14 , 000 chts . are already declared .
Drugs . —100 chests of camphor have sold at 60 s ., Star aniseed , oil advanced to tfs . lid . Malabar cardamoms sold readily at 3 s . 7 d . to 3 s . 9 d . for middling , and 3 s . lid ., to 43 . for good bright ; Tonquin musk , on a public sale of 70 edds . brought full price , 14 s . ' 9 d . to 24 s . Oil . for middling lo good pod . Gums . —Olebanum has declined several shillings per cwt . ; middling yellow drop selling at 30 s . ; and fair 35 s . to 35 s . Od . per " cwt . In other gums no particular change has occurred . India-rubber . ' —Small sales of East India lump have been made at . 8 ( 1 . ; and of fine Peru at Is . 7 A-d . per lb .
Seeds . —There have been no arrivals , and the sales are estimated at 3000 qrs . Bombay , in course of landing at 6 Oa . ; some small parcels ex-warehouse , for immediate delivery , at 61 s . ; good Calcutta at 58 s ., and St . Petersburg at 55 s . For arrival , 58 s . 3 d . has been paid for a small cargo Black Sea , outport delivery , and for two large cargoes at 58 s . A considerable business has been done in floating parcels of Calcutta seed , at 56 s . to 56 s . 6 d ., cost freight and insurance . Rape-seed has been in steady request . Good sound Calcutta at 58 s . ; fine Bombay ut 64 s . to 65 s . ; inferior to good , 48 s . to 60 s . per qr . Oilcake . —Harvest operations have checked the demand , but prices are steady . Hops . —New hops are now arriving freel } -, but purchases are made somewhat cautiously .
Cotton . — Unfavourable crop accounts from America gave an impetus to the markets at the early part of the week ; and subsequently the favourable advices overland in reference to Britiah cotton manufactures have added to the prevailing buoyancy . Both in London and Liverpool business has undergone a marked extension , and prices have advanced . In the former market the sales are HoOO bales at £ < 1 , to £
Potatoes . —Supplies come in freely , and generally in satisfactory condition . The sale is rather slow , but prices about the same , say Regent ' s Ware , 50 , s . to 80 s . ; Shaws , 60 s . to 603 . 5 middlings , 35 s . to 45 s . per ton . Stock . — -The supplies of live stock , especially bonsts and sheep , have been largo , but have consisted chiefly of inferior breeds , with a rather considerable proportion of store cattle . Prime descriptions , from their comparative scarcity , have commanded a steady sale nt about Jute ra ' tos , " but inferior kinds have been -difficult of sale and generally cheaper . The following have boon the supplies and prices : — Monday . Beast . Sheep . Calves . Pigs . 5 , 624 23 , 960 160 400 3 s . to la . lOd . Is . to 6 s . Us . 10 d . to 4 s . lOd . 3 s . 8 d . to 4 a . 8 d . Thursday .
llusn ' . —The advices from Manilla , reporting an - vance of ,.. importance in , the price of hemp , aPP e"rl * hnvo led to some improvement hero , and sales have been mndo at enhanced terms . The Americans have forsomo time been withdrawing largo supplies from luanma , which must nucossarily diminish our import , but wliicn will , on the other hand , curtail our usual , demand w the United States to an equal extent . Any very u < - cidgd movement in quotations ia , therefore , not lSonm ^ anticipated , especially as stocks arc adoquato to averse requirements . 1 Mrtals Manufactured iron has mot n fair aoiwin «> but Scotch pig ha « receded to 5 . <) s .
