EFFHCTS OS PTTBLIC FOUNTAINS AXTJ PiLATaBOTJNDS . —The importance cf public drinking fountains , as a means of sanitary and social improvement , -was pointed on * by the Liverpool Recorder in his charge to the grand jury this week ; and the jury fully concur in the Recorder's observations , desiring to express " their strong conviction that the temptation to drunkenness would also be greatly lessened by increasing the number of public walks , playgrounds , and gymnasiums , and thereby affording means ef innocent and temperate recreation for arl classes . " Mr . C . P . Melly , of Liverpool , to whom that town is indebted for its public drinking fountains , has recently established , at his own cost , a public gymnasintn , the results ef -which so far quite realise the anticipations of tlxe Recorder and the jury .
