" LIBERTY—EQUALITY—FRATERNITY . " Early next February will be Publishe £ V . tl » e First Number of " * T \ H E P E O P L E . " " We'll struggle on till all be won the good God has designed . The Empire of the People—the Monarchy of JMiud . " A Newspaper established by private individuals is manifestly inadequate to the attainment of any great National object . " It is , " says a distinguished Irish writer , " in many particular * defective , in many others injurious , and in some dangerous , unsafe , and untrustworthy ; it may be bought or bartered ; it may be traded with and trafficked on ; it may be corrupted , conquered or intimidated , and offers no guarantee for firmness , independence , or honesty . " —Influenced by these considerations , a number of Irishmen—deeply interested in the welfare of their Native Land—have resolved on the establishment of a National Weekly Journal , which , founded by the People , will be alone responsible to them , and will have for its immediate aim and object the uncompromising advocacy of their rights—their interests—and their liberty . Whilst all parties , creeds , and sections in Ireland have their respective organs by which the public opinion of the community is governed and directed , it appears strange that the great body of the Irish People are as yet unrepresented or misrepresented at the Press . The establishment of " Thb People " will remedy this deficiency , and as it will effectually labour to represent the public opiuion of the Irish People , so it will depend on their powerful co-operation for support . The principle on which the establishment of " Thb People " is proposed is that of a Joint-Stock Association . A fixed number of Proprietary Agents—one or more selected by the Popular Party in each locality—or persons who may voluntarily present themselves—subject to the decision of the Director *—will constitute the Company . With this view , a Provisional Committee has been formed in Dublin—Treasurers and Trustees have been appointed—a temporary Office has been secured—the sanction of the ffreat mass of the friends of freedom in Ireland , England , and Scotland has been obtained , and about the time specified the arrangements will bo so far completed as to enable «* Thk People" to commence its operations . " Thk Pkoplk " will be the largest size allowed by law , and as in its literary and political departments it will take a leading and prominent position , it may b « necessary to state that tho services of writers of ability and patriotism have been secured , and that ublo Correspondents are boiiig appointed in London , Glasgow , Paris , and New York . For obvious rensons . a mere outline of the Prospectus can be presented to the Public ; purtiea wishing for further information will nleusu communicate with the Secretary , who will give all requisite particulars relative tu the Proprietary Agouti . The fullest security provided by law will be given to the Proprietary Agents . Thtse Agents will not—unless in a fow instances—interfere with the apaHntment of Non-Proprietary Agents ; the services of the latter hi every town are necenaary , and an early application is requisite . Terms of subscription to " The Pkoplb , " ( payable in all cases in advance ) : — Yearly , X'ls . 6 a . Hulf-yearly , 13 n . Quarterly , 6 b . 6 d . Single paper . < jd . PRICE THREEPENCE . TH E . . LIXEBAR . y GAZETTE On and after the 1 st of January . 1861 , an important chanra will be madejnjhe Prici , J ) ontejits A _ and _ Coiiduct--of _** fR-7 LITERARY GAZETTE . . *«« . ' In accordance with the general demand for a sound critical review of New Publications , at a price that comes within the ' reach of all well-informed claBses , this old-established Journal will in future be devoted exclusively to Literature , and sold at Threepence . It will not be reduced in size , but will continue a sheet of sixteen , and , when rendered necesiary by Advertisements , of twenty-four , quarto pages . In 1817 . when THE LITERARY GAZETTE was established it embraced the whole circle of Literature , Science , and Art * including Music and the Drama , and was sold at a Shilling . As * readers and competition increased , the price wag reduced to Ninepence , then to Fourpence . The spread of education and the desire of being informed of what is going on . in the world of letters , have so increased among those who were never contemplated as readers of a literary periodical , that the present alteration has been determined upon , under a conviction that the additional number of readers will more than compensate for the difference in price . The same reasons which have led to a reduction in the price of THE LITERARY GAZETTE , have induced an alteration of its contents . Literature , Science , Fine Arts , Music , and the Drama , can no longer be treated efficiently within the compass of a weekly Journal . Science and Art have each their separate Journals ; and Music and the Drama are fully reported in the Newspapers . Instead of treating superficially of all these departments , the Conductors of THE LITERACY GAZliTTE have resolved to devote their energies to one and the most comprehensive—LITERATURE ; and that the public may be early informed of the character and contents of New Publications , it is intended to give brief notices of all Works as they come out , returning' to such oi them for review as may seem eligible for jhe purpose . All New English Books of interest , and occasionally Foreign Works , will be entrusted for review to ihe first writers of the day , and no department of Literature will be unrepresented . Books of Philosophy , Classics , History , Biography , Archasology , Travels , Poetry , Plays , Works of Fiction , &c , will be reviewed by the highest authorities on the respective subjects ; and the progress of Natural and Physical Science will be ably shown in the Reviews of Scientific Books and Memoirs . Orders and Advertisements received by Messrs . Reeve and Benhatn , 5 , Henrietta-street , Covent-garden , where , after the 1 st of January , 1851 , THE LITERARY GAZETTE will be published .
