THE CHICOEY QUESTION . The Public is not called upon to decide whether Chicory is better than Cofiee , nor whether it is an improvement to Coffee , but simply whether it is to be sold as Coffee , and at the price of Coffee . What is being sold to the Public as ground Coffee , at prices ranging from Is . to Is . 8 d . per pound , is , as the Lancet has proved ^ a compound consisting , in most cases , of more than half Chicory . Fair dealing dictates that every article should be sold for what it is , at its own proper price . But in the case of Chicory , the consumer is made to pay six times the value of the article , because it is sold under a false name . THE CENTRAL CO-OPERATIVE AGENCY has been established to counteract this and similar frauds ; every article will be sold under its own proper denomination , at a fair price . It guarantees to supply Pure Chicory- at 3 d . per pound ; Good Coffee , Is . ; Fine Coffee , Is . 4 d . j and the best Moehft , Is . 8 d . per pound . They can be had either in the berry or ground , and if ground it is guaranteed free from any mixture whatever . Persons who have been buying ground Coffee are recommended to try half a pound of Chicory , for i $ d ., and half a pound of either of the above Coffees . By thus buying the two articles separately and mixing for themselves , they will effect a saving of 4 £ d . per pound on the Is . ; 6 % d . on the Is . 4 d . ; and 8 $ d . on the Is . 8 d . ; and obtain a superior article . Centbai , Co-oPEBATrvE Agekct , 76 , Charlotte Street , Fitzroy Square . Branch Establishments—35 , Great Marylebone Street , London ; and 13 ; Swan Street , Manchester .

GRAND JUNCTION OMNIBUS COMPANY . ( PBOVISIOITAI . IiT EEOIBTEBED . ) CAPITAL , £ 100 , 000 , in Shae . es of &l each . AND WITH NO PTJHTJIBn LIABIMET ; The Directors taking power to extend tho Capital to Onh Mim , ion , as tho business of the Company may require it : to bo issued in successive Series of £ 100 , 000 , each Series at an inoroasing premium to _ the coneral Public , with a preference , at par , to the original Shareholders . The amount of the preliminary expenses is limited , according to Act qf Parliament , to Ten Shillings per cent . OFFICE : 36 , Bloomsbury Street , Oxford Street , London . BANKEBS : London & Westminster Bank , Bloomsbury Branch , Holborn .. This Company is projected in order to afford a profitable investment of Capital , by providing the means for supplying a groat publio want . Notwithstanding tho vast number of voluolos which crowd our thoroughfares , there has never yet boon introaucod that system of combined action which is necessary to aflord tho greatest amount of accommodation , and to dovelop tho pitsRongor » tramc of tho Metropolis and Suburbs . Hitherto t l' ¦ ' boon always more or loss uncertainty as to tho times at which _ vehicles would start and arrivo at their destination ; ami tho inconvenience has been aggravated when tho wish of lMiHsongors to proceed by a cross route rendered a ohango of omnibus nooossary . Belonging to separate Companies , often to independent proprietors , tho times of tho omnibuses havo not jxton regulated in aooordanoo with tho periods of passing of aii ° i ot" ? r lines , and , grout loss of timo has been tho result . Added to this , all havo oxporioncod tho inconvenience—when «> huiigm carnages in cold , wot , or sultry weather—of being compelled to stand in Iho open street for thi ? want of » , system J « pivHsoiiger Waiting-rooms , which would bo so easily organised »> y a largo association . presently indicated , will be made not only self-supporting , ot profitable to the Company . Thia will be ensured by connectan with the omnibus-traffic a Smai . 1 . Pabcels' Dbmveey , th Waiting-rooms serving the purposes of Receiving and Deliver Houses j and . from the great advantage of the transmission c parcels thus to be effected , with a facility frequency , and cei tainty never yet approached , a large profit may confidently p anticipated . . ¦ , , ,, - A Of course no system can be expected to secure the p . atronag of the public * unless the scale of fare ' s is adapjted to the require mentsof the'tunes , and in this respect an adaptation to th spirit of the age will not be wanting . A person proceeding S < any part of London , or the suburbs , may get into one ol thi carriages of the Grand Junction Company , and by the paymen of one fare , be conveyed to the pomt of his destination bj changing into any of the Company ' s omnibuses , as they crosi and meet on the line . For long double journeys the fare wil be 6 d . ; for return tickets on a single bne , 4 rf . ; for single fare of a whole distance , 3 d . ; and for intermediate spaces of a mile lrf . In order to carry out more completely the idea suggests by the railway system , day tickets for all the routes will be issue , at 1 * . each , payable for a series of seven days m advance ; an . as soon-as the proper charge can be fixed , season-tickets wiD b offered to the public . Time Tables will be published for th ^ ISeyond ' these ^ material advantages , this Company presents i claim to support which few wul fail to appreciate . It mil no only be profitable to its members and convenient to the public but highly beneficial to that large class known as « Ommbu Servants " On most of the present lines , the condition of thos who serve the public in that capacity is one of constant and un varying work . From a comparatively early hour m the morn ine till past midnight , many of the men are constantly employed without the opportunity of social or domestic enjoyment ; anc to such an extent is this carried , that many pf them only se < their children when they are asleep . Fifteen hours a day is re duired as a day ' s work from drivers and conductors in manj districts . This Company proposes to reduce these hours oj labour by not employing its servants more than twelve hours , s proper tune for meals being allowed and deducted . This is th « case , not only on week days , but also on the Sabbath , when th € same Quantity of work has to be performed ; thus preventing all attendance at public worship , and all attempts at religious culture It is only a wonder that such a state of things , tendmg to produce mental and physical degradation , has been so long tolerated by a religious community . This Company proposes to obviate this grievance by giving to every servant , at least , an alternate Sunday of rest , and shortening the hours of labour . It is believed that this will react beneficially , by inducing , on the paTt of the men , when they see that their interests are really carJd for , an increased civility of demeanour and willingness to oblige > and that improvement will be further ensured by the intended participation of all those employed in the profits of the Company . Thelightening of the labour of the men will not , as may be supposed at first sight , dimmish the accommodation afforded toihe public ; on the contrary , the time ^ saved by a weU-ordered system will produce both greater efficiency and opportunities of leisure . , Itls , perhaps , now only necessary . to show that such a Com . tiany would be what all successful Companies must be--a paying one * and in order to do that , the following estimate » gi ^ n , based upon accurate figures , showier tHe results of the ^ preaent omnibus , traffic on long lines . Outlay of Capital for One Omnilue . Omnibus ^ 1 W 30 horses , at £ 20 each 200 Harness , &c . .- 3 ° £ 340 Current Expenses of One Omnibus for One Tear . Corn for 10 horses , at £ 4 2 s ; per week £ 213 4 0 Hay and straw for ditto , at £ 2 2 s . per week ...... 109 4 0 Stabling per annum „? 2 a Shoeing „ - jj " " Horse-keeper ' s wages , at £ 1 2 s . per week 67 4 O Driver ' s ditto , at £ 2 per week 104 0 0 Conductor ' s ditto , at £ 1 10 s . per week 78 0 O Wear and tear of harness and omnibus , proportion of costs of Management , Office expenses , &c ... 60 0 0 Ditto , horses JO 0 0 Duty on miles travelled *¦ £ ? a " £ 816 0 0 The earnings of one omnibus for one year , at £ 19 5 s . per week , amount to £ 1001 . This , after paying all expenses , providing for the replacement of the capital employed , and liberally contributing to the Omnibus Servants' Peovidknt Societynn arrangement by which a future provision in case of sickness , superannuation , or death , will be made for the retiring servants of tho Company , or their widows and orphans , by the payment of a small additional amount weekly , to be given as an encouragement to good servants " continuing in the service of the Gband Junction Omnibus Company-will leave a surplus fullv adequate to the payment of a largo dividend ; but it must bo observed , that under euoh a syetem as that indicated , the increase of trafllo would bo immense , and the expenses far less , and tho profits greater than they now can bo . It is not too muoh to suppose that the gains will bo increased by at least one-third , which will enable the proprietors , after fairly compensating themselves , to offer further advantages to tho publio , and do still more for tho amelioration and improvement of tho condition of those employed . Tho offers of support to this Company have boon so groat jince its first announcement , that tho Directors are enabled to 3 ommenoo with a much Icsb amount of capital than was originally proposed . An arrangement has already been eueotou which willonablo the Companyto place on several linos of road jmnibuses far more light , elegant , and convenient than any , vhioh are now running , and to horse them in a superior manner , on highly advantageous terms . ,.., ,, , .
