The Progress and Improvement of the British Fisheries is a national obiect , in which all classes of the community are interested . The wealth and energies of tlie United Kingdom are , ; in other channels , rapidly developing our great industrial resources ; bufc our Fisheries remain ; in the sarno state in which they "were , two centuries ago . Our increasing population requires that eveTy means that art and science can devise should lie adopted , in order to procure the necessaries of life as abuudantly and . cheaply as possible ; but , though it is well known that the Seas "whicli surround the British Isles , teem with abundance of Fish , yet the supply of that article of food is always uncertain , and its price , generally high , is often exorbitant . The British Fisheries , if conducted on a . proper system , and on a scale of sufficient magnitude , aro capable of yielding an abundant supply of wholesome food . There is no branch of our National Industry to ^ which Steam Power can bo more advantageously and profitably applied . Fishing Banks as yet untouched , because they could not be reacbea by the present Sailing Craffr employed in the trade , may , by ineans of Steam "Power , bo made available for a vastly increased and mor « regular supply of Fish . Hitherto our IPisherioa have been prosecated only by the Coast Fishermen in Sailing Vessels at particular seasons ; and . the principal part of the Fish caught lias been cured for export , or sent to JiOndon , where tho demand may bo said to bo almost unlimited .. By the adoption of Steam . Power , tho regular and daily supply of this article of food in the freshest state , would be extended to tho principal ports of the United Kingdoin , to bo thonco conveyed by rail to the cities and towns of the interior . It is admitted by the trade that tho quantity of Fish , is not half of that ¦ which might bo sold , provided tho supyly were regular . It is , thereforo , proposed to establish tho Beitish Steam : Fisheries Company , for tho purpose of combining capital with skill , and by moans of Welled Steam Vessels , to" develop , in a manner that has nover beon attempted before , the inexhaustible resources of tho Sea , and to convoy tho Fish caught or purchased , with spoed and regularity to the best markets . As a commercial entorprizo , this Company presents undoubted advantages ; and while it will givo constant employment to a great mauy seamen and boys , in addition to zlioso already engaged in tho trade , it ts calculated that it ¦ will ; after defraying every expense , secure to tho Shareholders a return of from 20 to 25 per Cent , on the capital oxponded . TPho Directors propose to commence -with a capital of 100 , 000 k , in Shares of 10 Z . each ( with poorer to increase ) , and to place StoamoTs at different ports on tho Coasts of England and Scotland , nearest to tho Fishing Bonks in tho North Sea , and afterwards to extend tho operations of tho Company to Foreign Fisheries , as tho success of tho undertaking may justify . A ( l Sales of J ? is 7 t being for Cash , a Dividend can bo paid Quarterly . Applications for Shai-es to bo made in tlio annexed form , addressed to tho Directors of tho British .
